Artventure:
Journeys About Art and Architecture

Artventure is a fun way to expand your knowledge about art and architecture while meeting new people who have similar interests. Every journey begins at the Elmhurst Art Museum with coffee and conversation before departure. Four Artventure trips are offered annually with ticket prices including lunch, transportation and tour costs. Many destinations are determined by reviewing past participant surveys, so your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Artventure: Ten Chimneys

Come along as we visit the home of two acting legends, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, and be transported into the past as you are treated to a personal tour of their estate. The elegant three-story home is filled with memorabilia and mementos from a past era in each of its’ fourteen rooms. We will also see the Studio, Cottage, Poolhouse, Greenhouse and Creamery as well as enjoy lunch on the beautiful and enchanting grounds of Ten Chimneys. Artventure: A Day in Hyde Park

You won’t want to miss this trip as we explore some of the many fine establishments that Hyde Park has to offer! Our first stop will be to the Oriental Institute, home to a significant collection of antiquities from the ancient Near East. We will be treated to a tour of this marvelous collection followed by a delicious lunch at a nearby eatery. Our last stop will be to the Hyde Park Art Center where we will view their current exhibitions including video projection by photographer Ben Gest, a contemporary portrait series by various Chicago artists, and a large installation including sound, painting and projection by Mark Booth. Adult Figure Drawing

Join local art instructor John Nester in this extremely popular and comprehensive adult course about drawing the human figure. John taught art for 35 years and is recently retired from York High School in Elmhurst from teaching Drawing, Ceramics and Advanced Placement Art. This is an opportunity for artists and AP art students who work with sculpture, painting and drawing to improve their skills with the human figure. Students will draw from nude models, with emphasis on gesture, proportion, volume, contour line and composition. Pencil, charcoal, pastels, stick and ink and ink washes will be covered during the 8-week course. Pencils, charcoal, pastels and a large drawing pad are required. Students who are under 18 years of age and would like to participate in this adult class are welcome by having a parent sign their registration form.

Raku in the Park(ing Lot)
Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 from 10:00am-3:00pm

Bring the family for a fun-filled day at Raku in the Park(ing Lot) where you can pick a pot to glaze for only $15 and watch as it is fired right before your eyes and ready to bring home with you that day. Watch a potter demonstrate how to throw on the potter’s wheel and shop for raku vessels created by local artists.
Cost: $15/pot

There will also be a FREE children’s activity which is inspired by the artwork of EAM exhibiting artist, Cat Chow. Participates will use strips of material and weave them together to create a large community fabric mural. If able, please bring in your own fabric (old t-shirts, pajamas, bandanas, etc.) to add a personal touch to the mural which will be on display from May 21 - September 7, 2008.

Elmhurst Museum Day
Sunday, May 18 from 1:00-5:00pm

Meet EAM’s current exhibiting artist, Cat Chow, as she explains how to use simple materials such as plastic mesh and fabric scraps to create three dimensional sculptures and wearable pieces of art such as belts and bracelets! Also add to the community fabric mural which was started at Raku in the Park(ing) Lot and will be on display at EAM from May 21-September 7, 2008.
Museum admission and program are FREE on Museum Day!

Art To Go

This exciting new program is designed for any extra-curricular school group grades 1-5 who may have an interest in not only learning and talking about art, but creating art as well.  This program will consist of both a 30-minute gallery tour and a 45-minute hands-on art activity that coincides with the artwork on display at the EAM.  For information on pricing and availability, please contact Amy Janken at 834-0202 Ext.16.

A Collection of Collections: Drop-In Activities for Kids
Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays:
June 11-August 22 from 1:00-4:00pm

Bring in your collections of seashells, feathers, pop cans, baseball cards, action figures, etc… and participate in creating artwork surrounding these personal items. Also, see what other collections are popular with your peers and their renditions of them! This program is free with the price of admission; Members and children under 12 are always FREE. (Museum closed on July 4).

Docent Led Museum Tours
1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at 2:00pm

Tour the current exhibitions and McCormick House with EAM Docents Ida Kotyuk or Meredith Morris.  This informative guided tour highlights the 1952 McCormick House, one of only three residences in the country designed and built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and keeps you up on the latest exhibitions in the galleries!
 

EAM Offers Free Kids Activities at Oakbrook Center
Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13 from 12:00-4:00pm

Elmhurst Art Museum will feature free activities for kids at Oakbrook Center’s 45th Annual Invitational Fine Craft Exhibition. Come on over and join the fun as we create 3-D architectural structures out of paper, much like the work of current exhibiting artist, Susan Giles!

Baby in tow? Looking for something fun to do? Call your other mommy friends and meet up at Elmhurst Art Museum for a 45-minute gallery tour that all will enjoy! Imagine taking a leisurely stroll through the galleries in the company of other moms, learning about the current exhibitions, all while your little one peacefully dozes, snug in their stroller. For the safety of the artwork, all children must remain in their stroller for the duration of the tour.
Cost of tour is $6.00/adult; children under 12 are FREE.

The Elmhurst Park District and Elmhurst Art Museum work cooperatively to present an exciting selection of art programs in the state-of-the-art educational center at the Elmhurst Art Museum. Learn skills from trained professionals to ultimately build an appreciation for art and creative expression. All classes are held at the Elmhurst Art Museum 150 Cottage Hill – 630-834-0202 unless indicated otherwise. Art Museum members will receive resident rates, please show membership when registering.

Raku Fired Ceramics - Adult
Raku is a Japanese word meaning “enjoyment” dating back to the 16th century. Techniques of hand building including pinch pots, hard and soft slabs and wheel throwing are taught. Your work is finished by Raku firing which produces colors that are nearly impossible to achieve with standard ceramic methods. Students will also have an opportunity to work on stoneware in this class. Students of all skill levels are welcome. Supply list and clay for purchase is available at the first class.

Pottery Basics - Adult
Explore the creative and relaxing process of making pottery. Starting with hand building basics and progressing to the potter's wheel, new techniques are introduced throughout the session. Students will have the opportunity to practice and produce stoneware and Raku pottery. Try clay for the first time or continue to develop your skills in a fun, open atmosphere with plenty of hands-on assistance. Supply list and clay for purchase is available at the first class. Watercolor Studio Instruction - Adult
Learn the creative art of watercolor. Develop your natural creativity and gain a sense of accomplishment while learning basic techniques. For those with no prior experience with the medium, professional artist, Juliet Christensen, provides demonstrations and instruction in a step-by-step procedure. Let’s Play with Clay! - Ages 4-6
A FUN, introductory course to the wonderful world of ceramics! Learn basic technique for working with clay. Create pieces to be fired and glazed with different tools such as cookie cutters and a garlic press. Please wear old clothes and be prepared to get messy!

Basic Drawing - Adult
A solid foundation of drawing skills is necessary before learning any other art form. You will work with proportions, shapes, value and blending in your drawings. This four week class is perfect for beginners as well as intermediate level students wanting to further develop their skills. Daily demonstrations will be given by artist Marie Strauch with easy to follow instructions and tips. All supplies included.

Colored Pencil Drawing - Adult
This four week class will focus on blending colors to create even tones and shading for dramatic effects. You will work from still life set ups as well as from personal photos. Making Masterpieces -

Create a new masterpiece to take home each week. Artists will experience painting, printmaking and design while learning about a famous artist. Each week we will use paint in a new and fun way. If you like to create, this class is for you! Bring an old shirt for painting.

Lines, Colors, Squiggles & Giggles-

Get creative through exploration! Experiment with a variety of art materials and techniques, mixing colors and creating patterns. Each day we will read a book together for inspiration and talk about line, shape, color, texture, pattern and the way art can make us feel. Students will learn to express themselves while designing and painting. Bring an old shirt, we might get messy!

This class is designed for children to explore the world of art. Basic concepts such as line, space, shape, color, texture and composition will be introduced. Water-based paints, markers, pencils and inks are used to explore color mixing, texture and painting surfaces.

Home School – Art Around the World
Ages 7-14
This daytime curriculum enhances your child’s learning experience as a whole student. The student will learn from examples throughout history and geography and have a chance to try different art projects that coordinate with that culture. Sessions are 90 minutes; curriculum is designed for grade levels 1-8. Media includes drawing, painting, printmaking, 3 dimensional projects and pottery.

Young Rembrandt’s Preschool Drawing -
Ages 3 1/2- 9
Young Rembrandt’s makes drawing EASY! Our step-by-step teaching method ensures success and understanding for each child. Age-appropriate lessons teach students spatial organization, listening skills, fine motor skills and staying on task. Subject matter includes animals, landscapes, still life and much more. Young Rembrandts Superhero Cartoon Camp -
Ages 6-10
Pow! Bang! Wow! Now you can learn to draw your own comic book superhero. Each day we will complete several drawings while we explore a variety of characters. We will learn to draw the basic muscular superhero body and adapt it to the character of our choice. We will learn to draw action and movement while we complete the scenes around our superheroes using pencils and markers. All supplies are included.

Messy Business -
Ages 2-5 years (parent/child)
Boys and girls along with parents and caregivers will use their hands and creativity to experience different forms of messy art. Arts and crafts projects range from finger-painting to collages. Your child will develop fine motor skills through self-expression in this unique yearlong program. Several projects will be introduced each week. Dress for artistic creation and mess. Child must be 24-50 months before the first class.

Sticky Paws -
Ages 2-5 (parent/child)
Do you like to make snakes from Play-Doh, squish paint between your fingers or make scribble pictures? Children are encouraged to have their imaginations run wild as they explore and investigate activities using arts and crafts. Some creative activities are both indoors and outdoors. Participants must be two years old by June 1, 2008. Join us for summer fun for everyone! A copy of your child’s birth certificate must be brought to the first class. .

Summer Arts Camp -
Entering Grades 3-5 and 6-8
Arts camp is an opportunity to experience the exciting world of visual arts. Experienced instructors focus on teaching drawing, painting, creative crafts and ceramics. Lessons and projects are age appropriate campers. Each week will also consist of a field trip and swim day at either East End or Norman P. Smalley Pool. All campers should bring a sketchbook, sack lunch and drink each day.
