Transparent Watercolor Gives Variety to Upcoming Exhibition
March 10 - July 29, 2007

ELMHURST, IL - The Elmhurst Art Museum hosts the Transparent Watercolor Society of America’s (TWSA) 31st Annual Exhibition from March 10 through July 29, 2007, and showcases approximately 80 of the best contemporary watercolor paintings in the country. Attracting more than 900 entrants throughout the United States and Canada, the juried artwork varies widely in style and subject to give the exhibition a broad audience appeal. Several of the artists selected are from Illinois with others representing 19 of the fifty states.

Suburban Bank & Trust Company is the regional sponsor for the exhibition.

Founded in 1975 by two transparent watercolor artists, the purpose of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America is to advance the stature and foster appreciation of transparent watercolor as a major medium. This year’s exhibition features highly recognized artists such as Dan Burt, Frank Webb, Frank Francese, Mel Stabin, Dean Mitchell, Catherine Wilson Smith, Cheng-Khee Chee, John Salminen, Catherine Nash, and Ratindra K. Das.

TWSA is one of a few organizations who pride themselves in preserving and presenting transparent watercolor as a major medium. Watercolor paint must be applied in a manner that does not contribute to a heavy or opaque quality in the painting and the painting should exhibit an overall transparent appearance. Exhibition juror, Thomas Francesconi, is a signature member and past president of TWSA. He is also a signature member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS). An award winning artist, he attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago and studied with nationally known artist Irving Shapiro. A popular workshop instructor and frequent juror of shows and competitions, his work has appeared in numerous competitive exhibitions and travel shows as well as publications. “Communication is an enjoyable and essential part of life. As an artist, I have chosen to express myself through the language of paint and it is a wonderful experience to see how my colleagues have chosen to communicate through their art as well,” states Mr. Francesconi. “It makes the jury process incredibly difficult having to narrow down the selections to less than a hundred for this annual exhibition.”

Mr. Francesconi will present a gallery tour at the Elmhurst Art Museum on Sunday, April 29, 2007 at 2:00 p.m., which is free with admission.
