Quiet Movement Showcases Abstract Form
Elmhurst Art Museum Highlights
Acclaimed Sculptor Gary Justis
ELMHURST, Illinois – Elmhurst
Art Museum offers a journey into time and a heightening of the
senses with the sculpture of acclaimed artist Gary Justis from
October 27, 2007 through February 17, 2008. Museum visitors will
have the opportunity to analyze the shape and surface of three large
sculptures created by Mr. Justis in his exhibition entitled Quiet
Movement. Crafted from various flat forms of shaped and wood
structures, he achieves a mastery of space and form, bringing to
life the visual appeal of a shape and establishes an interaction
with physical and mental space.
Mr. Justis’s inspiration for his
sculpture stems from his childhood memories of the shadows created
by car headlights shining on the wall of his bedroom. Light had a
way of condensing shapes as he watched it and shadow move together
on a wall and create abstract forms. His sculptures are derived from
thoughts of these shadowy shapes and their impressions left on his
memory. “I believe the memory of objects at a certain moment in time
is an important event that can be likened to a sense of humanness in
all objects,” says Mr. Justis. His displayed work will include a
series of suspended wooden ovals that outlines the presence of a
dog’s face, a cartoon-inspired wave pattern magnified in a grand
sculptural form, and a larger-than-life bright green vertical
structure that hints at a friendly primacy.
Gary Justis was born and raised in
Kansas. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Wichita State
University in 1977 and his Master of Fine Arts degree from the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1979. He lived and worked
in Chicago for over 20 years. Currently, he resides in Bloomington,
Illinois and holds an Associate Professorship at Illinois State
University. The subject of more than 100 solo and group exhibitions,
his work is included in many distinguished collections such as the
Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY, National Gallery of Art in
Washington, D.C. and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago,
Illinois.
