Imagery Transcends Time and
Space
Artist Nicole Gordon Questions
Human Ideals of the Past and Present
ELMHURST, Illinois – Elmhurst
Art Museum presents the fantasy-like imagery of Nicole Gordon from
October 27, 2007 through February 17, 2008 in her exhibition
entitled Unifying Themes. Ms. Gordon skillfully combines art
historical references with contemporary scenes and decorative
patterning. Her unusual style is fueled by inspiration from
well-known Medieval and Renaissance artists. Her artwork explores
the complexity of human nature and illustrates human weakness
throughout history allowing viewers to have the opportunity to study
and question.
Ms. Gordon strives to erode
boundaries of time and space as her subject matter hosts an
environment for both past and present to coexist. Her technique
often includes elements that extend beyond the constraints of a wall
panel and the three-dimensional forms invite the viewer to enter the
scene and become immersed in the story of what is actually taking
place on the canvas. “These scenes are meant to be lighthearted at
first glance and draw the viewers in with luscious and decorative
surfaces that seduce them further into the paintings; the settings
are exaggerated to heighten dramatic plots,” says Ms. Gordon.
“Nicole’s choice in using a variety
of mixed media and historical art references unveil the similarities
dating back to the rebirth of society and how we find our current
society facing similar struggles today,” stated Elmhurst Art Museum
Curator Melissa Dahlquist. Born in Evanston, Illinois, Ms. Gordon
received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan
in 1998 and studied for a while at Lorenzo DiMedici University in
Florence, Italy. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows
and is represented by the Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago. Ms.
Gordon has recently displayed her work in solo exhibitions at the
Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, WI as well as at Miller Block
Gallery in Boston, MA. In addition, she has produced public artworks
for the Chicago Transit Authority and for New England Biolabs in
Ipswich, MA.
