New Exhibition Created for Teens
Elmhurst Art Museum Announces Portfolio
ELMHURST, Illinois – The
Elmhurst Art Museum (EAM) is pleased to announce a new exhibition
entitled Portfolio, which is open to all senior high school students
in DuPage County. The Museum will work directly with the art
teachers from local area high schools to select student art
portfolios that are sent to the Museum for adjudication. The entry
deadline is January 2, 2008 and submissions will only be accepted
through the student’s own school. Each submitted portfolio will
consist of six works of art created with the same medium by the
student. Approximately twenty-five portfolios will be selected and
displayed at the Elmhurst Art Museum from March 1-28, 2008. Chosen
portfolios will be announced on EAM’s website (www.elmhurstartmuseum.org)
on February 1, 2008.
With this new initiative, the Museum
hopes to help mentor high school students to successfully utilize
their talents in a variety of artistic avenues and encourage them to
consider further endeavors in arts-related education after high
school. “The exhibition itself opens the eyes of the community on
how much talent this age level has to offer,” says Museum Educator
Amy Janken, “We hope additional funding will occur so scholarships
can be awarded to three of the top twenty-five students selected
based on overall execution, originality and craftsmanship.”
In addition to the exhibition of
selected portfolios, the Museum plans to host programming for the
students who have entered the competition. This includes an all-day
workshop with a professional artist to further enhance their
creative experiences and partake in another exhibition of the
artwork they create during the workshop. Elmhurst Art Museum is
pleased to host this new exhibition, which is generously sponsored
by Graphic Chemical and Ink Co. and Target.
Thanks to Congressman Peter J. Roskam
(IL-6), another special highlight of the exhibition will be for one
of the top twenty-five students to be chosen to have an individual
piece of artwork from their portfolio sent to be on display at the
U.S. Capitol for a year as every spring, the United States House of
Representatives hosts a Congressional Art Competition in which local
visual arts contests are held within each Member’s district and the
winning entries from all districts are displayed in the Cannon
Tunnel.
Research shows that students who
receive an arts education perform better in school and are motivated
to stay in school. The importance of arts education has received
attention both statewide and nationally stressing the need to
provide all children with access to instruction in the arts, which
will encourage them to excel academically and emphasize their
creative development. Creating this new exhibition provides a means
for students to develop, display and hone their creative skills. The
Museum’s mission coincides with this opportunity to encourage the
role of young artists within the community to further their own
creative goals.
The Elmhurst Art Museum’s
award-winning modern museum structure incorporates the Ludwig Mies
van der Rohe-designed McCormick House, one of three such residences
designed by the internationally known architect, and contains museum
galleries, an education center and a variety of outdoor sculpture.
Located only 15 miles west of Chicago and adjacent to the Metra West
train line, the Museum offers public tours and programs, guest
lectures and art classes on a regular basis. Its mission is to
enrich the lives of its visitors by broadening their knowledge,
increasing their sensitivity to the fine arts and sparking the
development of their own creative talents.
