Interested in collecting art, or curious how to get started? Join us for a salon-style program and learn about buying artwork specific to your needs. *Not Just Another Pretty Face* is a triennial program created by [Hyde Park Art Center](https://www.hydeparkart.org/) in the mid-1990s that introduces artists to potential art buyers. This project facilitates a fun and accessible commissioning process that builds lasting relationships between artists and patrons, creates a new base of support for artists, and invests in the vitality of Chicago’s cultural community.

To date, the Art Center has raised more than $1,000,000 — half of which goes directly into the hands of artists, with the other half supporting Art Center programs. Through Not Just Another Pretty Face, 375+ original works of art have been commissioned by 275 new and established collectors interested in investing in Chicago’s artists.

Not Just Another Pretty Face Salon For Members

Elmhurst Art Museum in partnership with the [Chicago Film Archives (CFA)](https://www.chicagofilmarchives.org/) presents an evening screening of selected short films from the Chicago Film Archives Media Mixers series. This project pairs visual and sound artists who collaborate to make new video work using archival footage from the CFA collection. 

The evening includes snacks and an opportunity to view the summer exhibitions.

Nothing says America like listening to a Barbershop Quartet and eating Ice Cream! For our annual Visitor Appreciation Day, the Museum hosts strolling performances in the galleries and museum campus featuring the vocal stylings of Brew City Harmony. The quartet specializes in Barbershop, which is a truly original American musical art form, emerging here in the late 1800s largely from the same African harmonic and rhythmic heritage that produced Gospel, Ragtime and Dixieland jazz. This don’t-miss event is for all-ages.  

Enjoy the live musical performances, which are included with museum admission, and experience the two exhibitions on view - *Legacies: Selections from the Elmhurst Art Museum Permanent Collection* and *CROSSINGS* by Bernard Williams.

__More about Brew City Harmony:__

Brew City Harmony is Niel Johnson, Rick VanGomple, Bruce Vitale, and John Peters. The quartet draws together these four members of the Barbershop Harmony Society from several choruses in the Milwaukee area, with combined Barbershopping experience totaling 125 years!

Sung in four-part harmony, without instrumental accompaniment (a cappella), Barbershop differs from traditional choral music by placing the melody (Barbershop “lead”) in the middle rather than highest voice part, with a high tenor harmonizing above, a bass singer providing foundational harmonies below, and a baritone sweetening the mix with intricate harmonies in-between. Historically sung with improvised harmony (typically among men loitering in local barber shops), today’s Barbershop music is artfully arranged to create unusual chords designed to “ring” with resonant overtones. 

Formed in 1938 to preserve and promote this style of singing, the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) today comprises more than 14,000 members. Approximately 670 choruses and more than 1800 quartets perform in the U.S. and Canada (both male and female) as part of BHS, with thousands more among affiliated organizations in at least 11 other countries contributing to an estimated total of 70,000 Barbershoppers worldwide.

The McCormick House is a single-family home designed in 1952 by Mies van der Rohe, one of the great architects of the 20th Century. It is one of only three free-standing residences designed and built by Mies in the United States--and one of only two open to the public.   

Learn more about the unique history and design of the McCormick House. Tours are led by museum docents and are approximately 1-hour in length. Capacity is limited and spots sell out quickly, so advance tickets are recommended. Your ticket for the tour includes admission to the rest of the museum. Please check-in at the Front Desk of the museum upon your arrival.  You may view the museum exhibitions either before or after the tour.

Innovative artists Mayumi Lake and Bob Faust welcome you to their colorful exhibition. *Shakkei* marks the first museum exhibition for these two Chicago-based artists. 

Back by popular demand, the grande dame of Japanese Blues music, [YOKO NOGE ](https://www.yoko-noge.com/ "Yoko website")and her trio perform during the evening. EAM first presented a performance by the band during SOUNDBITES in July to large acclaim. Dancing is encouraged!

The exhibition takes its title from the Japanese principle of Shakkei—or “borrowed scenery”—a design philosophy that harmonizes built environments with the surrounding natural landscape. Lake and Faust interpret this concept broadly, using it as a metaphor for empathy, adaptability, and the capacity to hold multiple perspectives at once. Their works reflect a deep engagement with personal history, place, and the transformative power of shared visual language.


Opening Reception for Shakkei

Exhibiting artists Mayumi Lake and Bob Faust lead a tour and discuss *Shakkei*, or ‘borrowed scenery’: the Japanese concept of incorporating existing environments into the creation of new ones. They share their thoughts about how the Shakkei principle has informed their artmaking and their process of collaboration for this exhibition.

Special McCormick House tours led by expert guest docent __Bobbi Pinkert from the Chicago Architecture Center__ in celebration of the 2025 Chicago Architecture Biennial. As a self-named “archiholic,” Bobbi Pinkert has been a CAC docent since 1999. She is the leader of many tours including the First Lady, Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise. Pinkert will share her expertise about the McCormick House, Mies van der Rohe, and modernist architecture.

Exhibiting artist Mayumi Lake reflects on her deep engagement with the ancient Japanese practice of Housouge--bright and bold flowers believed to bloom in the afterlife—in this educational and hands-on artmaking workshop.

About the Artist:

Mayumi Lake is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work explores the ideas of time, memory, and floating between the real and imaginary. With a foundation in photography, she integrates digital images of nature and Japanese textiles into her collages, sculpture, sound, moving images, and installation to expand the narrative of the work and form conceptual layers. Lake’s artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery, Asia Society, Art in General, and Artists Space in New York; Chicago Artists Coalition and Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago; Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City; Fotografie Forum International in Frankfurt; Cornelius Pleser Galerie in Munich; Galleria PaciArte in Brescia; FOTOAMERICA in Santiago; Witzenhausen Gallery in Amsterdam; and the Setouchi Triennale in Takamatsu. She has published two monographs, Poo-Chi and Ex Post Facto, with Nazraeli Press. Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Art Institute of Chicago, Asia Society, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE)/City of Chicago, the McCormick Place Art Collection/Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA), Video Art World, the Joy of Giving Something Foundation, and Facebook. Lake received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

McCormick House Tour November 2

Exhibiting artist Bob Faust leads a fun afternoon with a lively variety of letter forms. Visitors are invited to explore the possibilities of creating new ways of seeing and ‘looking through’ with Faust, whose many years of design experience have forged a rich connection to the meanings of words and their beauty as physical, visual shapes.

About the artist:
Working in the space between art and design, Bob Faust crafts artwork with typography at its core and viscerality on its surface. Faust has over 30 years of experience as the principle and creative director of the eponymously named cultural branding studio, Faust. He makes his work with purpose first—to inform, empower and/or instigate in the service and celebration of human difference. Text, patterns, and the ideas of surprise and discovery emerge as throughlines throughout his conceptual art practice that defies categorization and genre. Faust has been recognized nationally and internationally for his inimitable creativity through many prestigious honors including a University of Illinois, College of Fine & Applied Arts, 2022 Distinguished Legacy Award and City of Chicago, 2022 Mayor’s Medal of Honor. Exhibitions have included Mass MoCA BY The Numb3r5 (Mass MoCA), For And Nor But Or Yet So (Poetry Foundation), WA/ONDER (167 Green), with all, and still... (The Peninsula Chicago), Rapt on the Mile (The Magnificent Mile Association), Ways and Means (Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and The Chicago Transit Authority), About Face: Stonewall, Revolt and New Queer Art (Wrightwood 659), Great Ideas of Humanity: Out of the Container (Chicago Design Museum), guilty / Innocent (MASS MoCA); Unfolded: Made with Paper (Chicago Design Museum), Betweens (Riverside Arts Center), and CHGO DSGN (Chicago Cultural Center).
